Marking the 2026 International Day of Rural Women, PDP governorship candidate Malam Muhammad Nami called for urgent measures to protect rural women in Niger State from insecurity and displacement, and for economic support to rebuild their farms and livelihoods.

The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) governorship candidate for Niger State, Malam Muhammad Nami, has called for urgent measures to protect rural women from insecurity, displacement and economic hardship, in a statement marking the 2026 International Day of Rural Women.

Citing figures attributed to the Niger State Government that more than 300,000 people have been displaced across 10 local government areas, he said rural women and children are among the most affected, with many losing access to their farms, businesses and income.

He called for a security framework to protect rural settlements and farming communities, rescue abducted persons and restore peace; humanitarian aid, reconstruction and safe, voluntary returns for displaced families, with support for host communities; and economic support for farmers through land, seeds, fertilisers, equipment and finance.

For rural women specifically, Nami advocated agricultural cooperatives, affordable credit, vocational training and small-business support, and urged that rural women be given a greater role in decisions on security, resettlement and recovery, alongside transparency in the use of public funds for affected communities. He said protecting rural women was essential to restoring food security.
